The rugged coastline north of the narrows is known to the residents of the North Kingdom as the Broken Coast, its name a reference to the hundreds of small islands that can be found there. Most of them are little more than large, barren rocks, buffeted by the icy Northern Sea. The region is for the most part desolate. Scraps of debris for shipwrecks long ago scatter the stony beaches, and ancient burial cairns overlook the surging waves from the tops of hills and battered cliffs. An occasional small village or fishing hut are the only glimpses of life beyond the seabirds and scavenging creatures. On some of the larger islands, however, crumbling ruins betray what must have once been larger settlements, now lost to time.
